"From Here to There"

I’m always very productive in the Fall, I guess it’s because there is less gardening to do. I finished this collage that I titiled “From Here to There.” I think it is fun to think about where I’ve been, where I am now and where I’m going. We all travel through life on our own paths, and this collage is a reflection of that journey, my journey. At this point in time I’m a little confused about my direction…I guess we all are at times. Creatiing this collage helped me gain some focus, and focus was sorely needed.

Correspondence through handwritten letters is almost a thing of the past. I will probably always cling to this more intimate way of communicating. Email and Social networks now connect us in an instant, and allows us to share thoughts and images, trivial as well as important events in our lives. But there is just something about receiving a hand written letter that I crave…
I grew up traveling with my parents. We lived in Togo, Africa, England, Denmark and The United States and correspondce through letters became a very important part of my life. I used to hand write several pages pouring out my thoughts and feeling to my cousins, and friends “back home.” I remember achingly awaiting letters in the mail, and finding a private spot to open and savour them.
In all those years of traveling and now living over seas from my Danish grandparents correspondence between us has evolved to the internet, other than Christmas and birthday cards. Last month out of the blue my grandmother sent me a letter and I almost cried to see her very slanted cursive handwriting.
That’s when I knew that I needed to creative a piece about the importance of correspondence in my life.
